Lee Atwater loved dirty tricks: He used bigotry to brand a Jewish candidate as someone who did not believe in Jesus Christ and used code words during the Reagan and first Bush campaigns that said, “Be afraid of blacks.”
Atwater continuously lied to the media throughout his career, something he liked almost as much as winning. The media blindly accepted his statements as truth.
